According to Dr David Frawley, Bharani has the power to take things away. Its basis above is the removal of life from the body. Its basis below is the carrying of the soul to the realm of the ancestors. By combining these three factors, creatures move on to the next world. Bharani Nakshatra takes away that which has reached its term of life to go on to a new condition. It shows the movement of the soul away from the body. Yama guides the soul to the astral plane, where it can experience the result of its Karma from the present life and prepare for the life to come. Yama is a figure of discipline and sacrifice, including the practice of Yoga. This Nakshatra has general powers to manifest change by removing negative or old things that are irrelevant. Bharani gives rulership over one's ancestral legacy and lordship over one's equals.

Bharani is ruled by Lord Yama, the God of death. According to Mahari Patanjali's Yogasūtra, Yama is one of the eight limbs of yoga, called the Aștānga yoga, and Niyama follows that. Maharshi Patanjali talks about five forms of Yāmas or restraints (abstinences) which are Ahimsa (non-violence) Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-covetousness), Brahmacārya (celibacy). Aparigraha (non-acceptance). It is believed that Süryaputra Yama is the first individual to fulfil the requirements of these five restraints, and therefore he is known as Yama. If we understand death's true nature, we realise that it is merely a transformation of an old and worn-out state to a new one because the Atmā never perishes! It also means consolidation of old experiences and advancing to the arena of newer experiences.

The meaning of these mythologies is that this is the Nakshatra of restraint. On one side, this Nakshatra represents death matters; on the other, it represents self-restraint from materialistic indulgence, and therefore, penance. It is widely believed that during pregnancy, the mother needs to have restraints from indulgence (alcohol etc.); else, it could harm the life growing within her. We can see similar ideas elsewhere. For instance, during an activity's developmental phase, overindulgence in something can trigger a death blow to the activity due to loss of focus.

The symbol of this Nakshatra is a Yoni or the female sexual organ, which is the symbol of birth and creation. Bharani symbolizes the pain and restraint that the mother goes through before delivering the child. This Nakshatra also denotes breaking away from old and worn-out practices and starting something new. It represents the burning of trees by a forest fire and the germination of new ones from the ashes. While the Ashwini gives a dose of life to create something new. Bharati sees through the upheaval and change that follows due to the establishment of a new order.

One born in this Nakshatra does not tolerate things carried down from the past just for the namesake. Since changes to established practice are painful, the person needs to pass through occasional painful phases in life, truly life changing. Usually, one born in Bharani has a powerful character and stamina, and he can withstand turbulence and turmoil in life with poise and composure. This makes him more potent by the day. Each such experience in his life is transformational, and the person is always eager to face several such transformational journeys. Due to his propensity to withstand negative experiences with poise, he is still on his face, despite having a raging volcano inside.

One born in this Nakshatra is transformational and revolutionary and is eager to break away from worn-out practices to give rise to something new. It conveys ideas about discipline, self-control, faith, firmness, enduring support, sustenance, nourishment, etc. However, under strong Krūra influences, natives of this Nakshatra may develop extreme tendencies, such as those seen in criminals and terrorists.

Despite being pure-hearted and of a helping mind, a Bharani born is generally not liked by all because of his bluntness. He expresses his opinions without mincing his words. What is there in his heart comes out lucid; however, that is not digested by all. His undiplomatic and tactless style occasionally leads to confrontation and conflict. But when he realizes his fault, he also does not hesitate to apologize earnestly. He does not harbour hatred towards anyone because his mind is an open book.

He is a strong-willed person and detests subordination. He bows down to others only when he admires and honours that person; else, one cannot get him to do things by forcing him. Like a bull, he retorts and challenges! The person is curious and likes to acquire knowledge from diverse fields, and he can dig deeper. Bharani person shines in public and social life, but he must face criticism, opposition, and conspiracy, which lead to anxiety, loss of health and wealth. He has a commanding nature and likes to establish his supremacy, to which he often faces obstacles and challenges. He appears boastful or arrogant to some, but he is merely speaking out his heart. His life is full of ups and downs because of the difficult circumstances he must overcome. He is uncompromising on his principles, and that leads to troubles.

Occasionally, he likes to indult in talebearing and spread rumours, but this occurs mainly when the Nakshatra is afflicted. Even though he has frequent ups and downs in life, none stays long. He looks after others but is utterly oblivious to his own needs, and therefore there must be someone else who should look after him. Having a relationship is one area where he has problems, mainly because of his strong opinions, judgements, and inability to compromise in a conflict. This occasionally alienates his family, friends and well-wishers.

Besides the characteristics mentioned above, a Bharani female possesses a clean, admirable and modest character. She respects her parents and elderly and look after them, but she is not open to their advice. She is courageous, aggressive, argumentative, impulsive and optimistic.
